Rocky Mountain Cup Timeline |
|
| October 2004 | Discussions begin among fans of both clubs. Opening salvos of insults are launched across the Rockies. |
| November/December 2004 | An unnamed bi-partisan organization is created with the goal of promoting the rivalry, establishing an official competition, setting rules and creating a trophy. |
| January 2005 | Organizing website announced to public as the media arm of C10, which was also announced as the Committee of 10 to manage the competition. |
| February 2005 | Fan voting takes place through the website to choose a name for the competition. |
| March 2005 | Competition formally announced as The Rocky Mountain Cup, an overwhelming favorite among voters. Fundraising for the trophy begins. |
| April 16, 2005 | First-ever RMC match played in Salt Lake City and broadcast nationally on ESPN2. RMC logo unveiled. Real wins 1-0. Attendance of 25,287 is the highest ever for an RMC match. |
| September 9, 2005 | First-ever RMC match in Denver. Rapids win 2-0. |
| October 1, 2005 | Cup Trophy makes its first public appearance before the third game of the 2005 RMC in Denver. Rapids win 2-1. |
| October 12, 2005 | Cup Trophy makes its first appearance in Salt Lake City. In the final game of the 2005 RMC, the Rapids win 1-0 to take home the inaugural Rocky Mountain Cup on total points, 9 to 3. |
| August 10, 2006 | In the final RMC match to be played at INVESCO Field, the Rapids are humiliated on their home turf as Real wins 4-1. It is the largest margin of victory ever for an RMC match. Jeff Cunningham scores two and assists on a third goal for the most points by a single player in an RMC game. |
| September 2, 2006 | For the second year in a row the RMC is decided in the fourth match, played in Salt Lake City, and is awarded to the Rapids in a 1-0 win. Tension and emotions run very high among both players and the near-18,000 fans in attendance. |
| April 30, 2007 | The third year of the RMC begins with a 2-0 road win for the Rapids. |
| May 10, 2007 | In the first-ever RMC match at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, the two teams produce an MLS first: a draw in which only own-goals were scored. |
| September 22, 2007 | Real wins 1-0 in driving rain at Rice-Eccles Stadium, the first match between the clubs since Rapids' fan favorite Kyle Beckerman was traded to Real. |
| October 20, 2007 | The deciding game of the 2007 RMC was particularly memorable. With both teams failing to qualify for the MLS Playoffs and eliminated from the US Open Cup, the RMC remained the lone honor up for grabs. With the Rapids needing only a tie at home to claim the Cup for a third successive year, Real's Robbie Findley snatched the winner in the 87th minute to claim the first RMC title in Salt Lake history. |
| May 15th, 2008 | With a first-place berth and first blood in the Rocky Mountain Cup both on the line, the Colorado Rapids hit for two goals in the final half-hour of the match to claim a 2-0 victory against Real Salt Lake at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Omar Cummings finally broke the tense deadlock with a goal in the 65th minute, then Christian Gomez converted a penalty kick with seven minutes to go to put the game away as the unceasing offensive attack by the Rapids finally broke through. |
| August 29th, 2008 | Facing an injury-depleted Colorado club, Real Salt Lake drew on an injury-plagued player of its own to undo the Rapids and even the series at one win apiece. Fabian Espindola scored a pair of goals to lead RSL to a much-needed 2-0 home victory at Rice-Eccles Stadium. |
| October 25th, 2008 | A 90th-minute goal by Yura Movsisyan provided Real Salt Lake the 1-1 draw they needed to retain the Rocky Mountain Cup for the second straight year. The result also clinched the first-ever MLS playoff for Real, while simultaneously denying the rival Colorado Rapids a postseason berth. |
